Resources for Vital AgingThe University of Minnesota Vital Aging Initiative has been developed to connect older adults across the state with education plan programs that support their employment, self-sufficiency, community participation, and personal enrichment. The programs may be addressed to employers, service providers, and policy makers as well as to older adults themselves. The education process should facilitate the sharing of strengths which, in turn, strengthen community. Demographic changes have resulted in a growing population of healthy, active, mobile adults ages 55 - 80+ who constitute a new generation in the world. The greatest current impact of rapid aging is being felt in rural Minnesota: a) in farm communities where the population is declining and older residents must share their strengths and take care of the each other; and b) in locations with natural amenities where retirees are relocating. The College of Continuing Education is ideally positioned to provide leadership for this statewide effort. Through its new, "University of Minnesota Career and Lifework Center" and the Vital Aging Network Web site, The College of Continuing Education is paving the way for individuals and organizations to promote self-sufficiency, community participation and quality of life for and with seniors through education, advocacy, and leadership development.
